STATEMENT

Fabric is truly my medium. I have been fabricating creations of fiber since 1988.
A love of fabric textures and saturated colors stimulates my creativity.
A love of existing works of art drives me to people my work with beloved and recognizable images which I hope will
inspire viewers to see these works in a new light.

INDIVIDUAL ARTIST INSPIRATION
Three artists who have had particular influence on me are Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp and Mark Tansey.

Picasso’s unusual images and bright colors speak to me.  Four of my larger works have been inspired by his treatment
of the human face..  The moving and, at its time, controversial "Demoiselles d’Avignon",  “Girl in the Mirror” and his
“Musicians” have all provided artistic fodder for my fabric art.

Marcel Duchamp’s ambivalence about art intrigues me.  I am both drawn and bewildered by his work and have
expressed this by using his ready-mades in "Ready Mades as Objects of Art”, his “Bride Visited by her Bachelors
Even” in my "Vanity Thy Name is Woman" and reinterpreting his wonderful "Nude Descending a Staircase".

Mark Tansey has been a significant influence.  His wit and art-historical learning leads him to make new statements
about existing works, as in his use of  Paulus Potter’s "The Young Bull" of 1647 in his "The Innocent Eye Test", 1981.
I enjoyed creating a similar spoof with his "Triumph  over Mastery II", 1987.

By putting humvees in the background (instead of Quakers) I have brought fresh and timely perspective to Edward
Hick’s "Peaceable Kingdom".
My "The Next Supper" brings religious figures and images from all over the world to the setting of Leonardo da Vinci’s
"The Last Supper".
Edouard Manet’s "Le Dejeuner" re-emerges as "Teddy Bears’ Picnic".
Shepard Fairey's marvelous stencil art has provided yet another inspiration.  See "Obey" and "Femmes ala Fairey"

ART PERIOD INSPIRATION
The wonderful rhythyms and curves of Art Deco inspired my piece "Echoes of Deco".
The unusual shapes in today’s modern architecture led to "Architexturally".
The enigmatic Surrealists, the colorful Fauves and  the flat and brightly bold images of Modern Art have all inspired
large compendium quilts.
